GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice Maker
It’s no secret that the GE Opal nugget ice maker made by General Electronics (GE) is one of the most popular countertop nugget ice makers currently available.
On this page, we will take an in-depth look at all the specs, as well as give you all the pro’s and cons.
Let’s dive in!
Table of Contents
GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker 1.0 Vs 2.0
There are currently 2 different versions of the GE opal nugget ice maker available on the market, but what’s the difference between the two? Is it worth buying the 2.0 at a higher price? What extra’s will you be getting?
As you can see in the comparison chart above, there are a few differences between version 1.0 and version 2.0. Although there are some cool new feautures such as wifi connection and a new color, in our honest opinion, it’s not worth paying an extra 80 bucks for.
Consider version 1.0 isn’t cheap either, the small improvements really don’t justify a higher price.
Both make the exact same amount of nugget ice per day, have the same storage capacity, and make the same quality of nugget ice. In other words, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose. If you think any of the new features are worth an extra 80 bucks, go for it!
GE Profile Opal Countertop Nugget Ice Maker Review
The GE Profile Opal | Countertop Nugget Ice Maker is our top #1 pick and it’s – without a doubt – the best nugget ice maker out there.
It has over 11,000 reviews on Amazon with a 4.5-star rating! People are very enthusiastic about the overall quality of the opal nugget ice maker. Users reasoned that the nugget ice machine is very solidly built and has a nice design. In addition, they could tell that it’s made of quality materials.
People also commented that it’s super user-friendly (just 1 button to turn it on and off). Where Should I Buy the GE Profile Ice Maker?
Amazon has the best price for the GE ice maker, so we recommend you buy it there. You can also buy it at the webshop of GE itself (which has the same price).
What is Opal First Build?
According to GE, “GE’s FirstBuild is a global co-creation community that harnesses the brainpower of the maker movement to change the way major home appliances are conceived, designed and manufactured. A physical state-of-the-art microfactory on the University of Louisville campus, and international online forum, FirstBuild speeds products from mind to market by enabling customization through small batch production, without the costs and risks of traditional mass manufacturing.”
The Opal Countertop Nugget Ice Maker created by Firstbuild is a predecessor of the profile nugget ice maker and is still available on Amazon:
How does this ice machine work?
First, water is poured from the water tank into the cylinder where the temperature of the water will be lowered to freezing temperatures. Then the nugget ice machine will start to drill and shave the ice so that ice flakes will start to fly off and compress. These compacted ice flakes will turn into crunchable nugget ice (instead of regular ice cubes). That’s the chewable ice everybody loves!
If you want to see how the GE Profile Opal Nugget Ice maker measures up against the other nugget ice makers that I have reviewed, take a look at the comparison chart above.
As you can see, the nugget ice maker created by GE is rated as the “best overall”. Next on the list is the Frigidaire Nugget Ice Maker, which is a great “bank for buck” ice maker.
The specs don’t lie. The profile ice maker is a beast! As we discussed in our review, we think it’s the best nugget ice maker out there at the moment. Although it has some small cons (e.g. no self-dispensing feature), it easily blows other similarly priced pellet ice machines out of the water.
So if you’re looking for a high-quality nugget ice maker that will enable you to enjoy large amounts of “the good ice” each and every day, we highly recommend the profile ice maker!
